There are a lot of animations from the owl in the app and I like how it cheers me on and makes me feel like I am smart and capable of doing anything. It also makes it easy to remember how to speak the language, unlike when you are cramming for an exam in these classes. > > **Inconvénients**: It isn't convenient to use if you aren't subscribed to a premium plan with Duolingo. Some of the features that require this plan I feel are basic features that everyone should have access to. Additionally, Duolingo could realize that people using this app don't always have time to learn a language and should not push as often through notifications or email to continue. > > Overall, I like learning a new language through this app. It definitely is a great tool to practice the skills when learning a new language in ways you don't get in a traditional setting. Many of the lessons just spit out nonsense phrases with no ability to get a full translation and force a user to answer when they don't even understand the question. > > In the beginning (with a paid membership) the lessons are helpful to start to build a single word understanding. The problem is with syntax and grammar, there is no explanation or way to get help when the app forces you to complete a lesson. It will just repeat over and over gain until you "copy" the answer but never helps you understand the problem. I am 253 consistent days in on a paid account for Duolingo to learn Italian and have hit a major brick wall for the past 60 days. At this point, the disjointed lessons have no bearing on life or real world conversations and offer no explanations to grammar or syntax. While I already knew some words and phrases, Duolingo's paid version has done nothing to get me from a basic understanding to an intermediate level. Making friends in the app is no help since you can not talk with them and the Lilly "AI" bot is highly limited. Duolingo has some nice things about it, but for the person who is looking to become fluent in a language, this is not the program. Unless you are speaking with a human or have exercise programs to help with common everyday situations, words and phrases, Duoling is just not that program. I gave this app great hope, but it has seriously let me down. There is no way to tailor your lessons or have it learn where you need help and because it forces you to give and answer you do not understand the question or phrase, there is no way to actually learn.
