Expensive but extremely effective for project management

In a few words JIRA is a task tracking software that makes life easier when working on a project.

Once the initial setup is in place (easy to do for common scenarios ) all is left for an administrator is to manage the list of projects and user accounts.
Note that parts of the process (e.g.: customizing workflows) need to be done up-front, since this will become more complex once one or more projects are configured and in-use

As for usability, it is one of the best tracking systems I've ever used: as a developer/QA you can easily update the status of your work in a user-friendly way. As a manager, you can always get the overview you need by just opening a screen or a report (most of what you need is in place by default)

What's best about it is that as long as it is installed on-premises, it can be used as a central point of information for everyone involved with a project. The fact that it can be integrated with other common software industry tools adds further benefit from this.

In the end, I should probably add that I've been using all kinds of bug tracking systems for about 15 years (starting with ancient tools like redmine going through PivotalTracker or VersionOne or JIRA) and almost all of them were either missing features that I deemed important or "spartan" usage/layouts that constraint the usage.
JIRA just provides everything that's needed in completing a project out-of-the-box (whether it's Agile, Waterfall or Kanban or whatnot)

Avantages

- Overviews & quick access to information
- Possibility to integrate with most commonly used systems (it integrates with pretty much all mainstream tools, nut just the ones from Atlassian) - you can integrate it even with continuous integration tools or test management tools (e.g. TestRails)
- Security control (everything is fine grained, tools to configure fine-grain access are already integrated
- Comes out of the box with the most common work scenarios (client onside/offsite, development only/development + product management, etc)
- Reporting (easy to extract the things that matter (whether this is worked hours or development velocity)
- Version management (easy to manage what features are grouped in a release, or what fixtures were done for which version)
- Workflows can be customized to match just about any real-life usage scenario
- Allows for both on-premises (self-hosted) installation and cloud usage.
- Configurable dashboards

Inconvénients

- Pricing - it is prohibitively expensive for small companies, although they are making steps to minimize this with the new pricing models (e.g.: a few years ago they started allowing up to 5 accounts per project and unlimited projects, for a fixed yearly fee).

Jira is Great for Development, but only Good for Creative

Publié le 14/01/2022

A great way to track deadlines between silos and especially developers.

A great way to track deadlines between silos and especially developers.

Avantages

Jira is out of the box free, and it's amazing because it works with everything by the same company. It also allows for easy organization of projects and silos, which intersect with each other. You can easily hand off tasks and allow people to collaborate.

Inconvénients

Jira has a very development based angle, so if you're trying to manage a hybrid team, it works well. But if your team is marketing heavy, it's very anti-user friendly unless a person has familiarity with code or databases. It's just sparse and less user friendly.

We started using JIRA because it was the industry standard and most of our developers used it before. It has a lot of quirks though and I wouldn't really recommend it.

Avantages

Once set up, it is easy to use and offers a lot of options to customize it to our processes.

Inconvénients

JIRA is very difficult to set up and configure correctly. Support is inexistent. In one instance, an issue got deleted by some JIRA quirk, we lost all billable time tracking associated to the issue and JIRA never even tried to investigate or let us know what happened or what we could do about it. There are also outages on a regular basis or parts of the system not working, or working differently for members of the same team.

Overall it's a good product. It does alot more than you would think. We have even used some of the templates it comes with to develop our own internal processes.

Avantages

I like the ability to control workflow, tasks and resources. It's a great way to keep a team organized and on schedule. Integrates nicely with other development tools and has an easy to use interface. Most users coming from other similar tools can hop right in.

Inconvénients

We are currently still using Dev Ops for our repositories. This tool needs the ability to push and store changes and versions of files.

I have used Jira in a few projects and every time it proved to be a reliable and productive solution. Mostly we use Jira to keep track of our developer's time in the Kanban board. It is a great tool that allows the developers to actually show us how hard they work and what tasks they tackled. Jira has increased productivity in all projects I used it in.

Avantages

Tracking tasks is a time consuming effort, and one that is easy to forget. Luckily, there is Jira. Jira lets you track your tasks and time spent on them without encroaching on your day. It is easy to set up (once you know what you are doing), easy to use, and a delight to look at. It provides the time tracking and issue tracking tools that any serious project requires.

Inconvénients

It is hard to set up the first time. You need to know which functions you need and which you should remove. But once you set it up and know how it works, it is a treat to work with it.

It is undoubtedly the best thing ever introduced for project managers! For developers like us, it saves us a lot of headache to do things systematically, rather than spending time on Excel sheets.

Avantages

Perfect for resource management and issue tracking, good for project managers to find out where the team is spending maximum time and helps in bandwidth allocation, understanding team velocity. With the Atlassian Suite, Jira + Confluence is a deadly duo.

Inconvénients

Very slow! The dashboards are not fast. Also, for milestone tracking, percentage completion is not very well implemented as well as time spent does not get that much of visibility.

Working on jira is very easy, and makes all the work organized, I like to use it because it keeps track for everything, every ticket and comment and changes.

Avantages

When I started using Jira, it was the first time I was in an Agile environment, it was perfect, the best features are the backlog, how to track tickets, and how to manage sprints, also the relations tickets is also important because sometimes tickets are dependent from other tickets which Jira makes it clear and visible.

I've had a mostly positive experience with JIRA, however there are a few things that JIRA could be doing better given the relatively high price tag--I would like to be able to do more customized reports/dashboards, and I would like to be able to create JIRA filters with stronger capabilities

Avantages

Ease of use for both business (access mostly front-end reports, dashboards & Confluence) and developers (access mostly JIRA boards)

Inconvénients

I'm currently trying to work with our developers to integrate Azure DevOps (where the code is housed) to JIRA in order to track code and link code with JIRA stories that are worked on. The apps to do this in the JIRA app store aren't great and we're encountering more issues than we expected. It seems as though JIRA integrates with a (soon-to-be) outdated version (might be using the wrong words) of Azure DevOps that my team no longer uses.

Fantastic Tool that is ESSENTIAL for Agile

Publié le 25/08/2020

Since Jira has been introduced, it has allowed the company coming closer together and break down the previous silos that were prevalent for quite some time. This assisted the architects, UI/UX engineers, developers, testers, and all of management/leadership to take a peek at different parts of the entire overall lifecycle of development. Automated scripts took this a step further which allowed reports to be generated and key points to be communicated across. I believe this tool or any other tool will suffice for your Agile needs however Jira is considered one of the more widely used and best tools available.

Avantages

Jira is an essential tool that will greatly improve traceability, task management, and planning for any organization. It is incredibly intuitive when it comes to the reports that may be generated for any user. Giving the business greater control and vision into the finer details of each day (if process is followed by users), a company or organization can drill down into details of what teams and resources are working on. You can step back a level and see overall features and implementations to be delivered by any set of teams/individuals. It truly is a well thought out tool with lots of available customization.

Inconvénients

One thing I've always disliked about Jira is the lack of UI customization such as applying themes or having certain sections stand out more than others. You will see much of the UI is plain and ambiguious. I am not sure if this is customizable from a different permissioned user however, I have never seen the ability to have a nicer looking interface from my accounts within my organizations. Yes it is much more powerful but lacks creativity in UI design.

We use Jira on our own servers. We benefit from many features such as task management, agile, and kanbans. It also simplifies our sprint planning processes. I like the epic and story features the most. Moreover, if you use it on your own server, it is so easy to customize as you wish. Especially, it provides you great documentation, and when a new member joins the team, they can easily adapt to the whole process through the issues in Jira. We use Confluence for our documentation processes, it is especially useful for our technical documentation processes.

Avantages

Easy team task tracking, efficient sprint planning, and organized confluence. All and more is very easy to use and adapt.
Epics and stories help you to divide the project into parts and assign divided tasks within the team. In this way, you can follow all of the elements of a project in detail. And no step escapes from your attention. You can also distribute the workload very planned and provide team collaboration.

Inconvénients

Sometimes connection is low. But overall, it's really beneficial.

The overall experience with Jira was nice and the best problem that Jira is solving to us, the management of project and tracking the performance of contributor, managing the stages of a software cycle and also letting manager know at what stage my code build is.

Avantages

The best feature of Jira is to manage the workflow of project smoothly and the integration part of Jira with other software like Jenkins, slack etc. The integration with other software keep everything at same page, whether the update after code deployment and alarm setter.

Inconvénients

I have used thoroughly but couldn't find as such any improvement, with time it has improved a lot, I guess Jira can focus on the UX and UI part, the part of searching in Jira is complicated, it can be simplified.

Jira is the Soul of a Agile Project wether it comes to
* Planning your sprints
* Tracking your sprint activity
* Tracking Bugs
* Tracking Epics
* Developer Time management

So there are numerous benefits that it provides as a platform which make the project management task a lot easier

Avantages

Have been using Jira for more than 5 years, One thing that I liked about this is that evolved with the changing demands of the IT industry, today it's the cleanest way to Plan and Track a Project, Now when we are in the phase of Agile Development and Scrum is a day to day activity, it gives a clear indication of whether the team is on track or not, secondly, we can plan to create backlogs ahead of time that makes it effective for planning the project ahead.

Inconvénients

There should be a lite version where it loads on slow internet connections, Atlassian should look into making it lightweight and make it faster to load specially on VPN as we have moved to WFH culture and internet speed is a issue at remote places

Jira was what we needed to easily manage multiple projects and teams

Publié le 06/05/2022

Avantages

Boards flexibility: combining projects, teams, tasks levels and more as desired in one or multiple boards to make easier to keep tracking of the work and also to provide visibility of the progress to stakeholders without distractions. Dashboards that we can display in the office so people can keep focus on what's important.

Inconvénients

A task can't be in one sprint and the sub-tasks in another: Sometimes we have the situation where a task was not completed within the original sprint and we need to move everything to the next sprint when I rather keep the sub-tasks in the sprint where they were completed.

At a basic level, the product is fantastic. It allows for the collection and organization of information that Product and Project Managers, QA folks and developers can all leverage and understand very easily and collaborate one.

Avantages

Having worked with several QA and development teams, Jira is a fantastic tool which can be tailored to fit just about any software development project. I enjoy that the standard feature set is powerful and easy to setup, but it can also be expanded upon using custom programming or third-party extensions. Given the product's prominence in the marketplace, it's easy to get started with a new project and quickly get the entire team on the same page in capturing bugs, tasks and feedback and moving work through a process.

Inconvénients

As flexible as the system is, there are times where Jira simply isn't able to accomplish a task in the most straightforward way. As a project planner, the number of organizational levels (Epics, Stories, Tasks and Bugs) can seem like an appropriate amount, but each of these levels need to be customized in order for the system to meet the fundamental requirements jira has in place out-of-the-box. What I least about Jira is that is seems to have an "attitude" about how work/tasks should be organized. As soon as you encounter something that is not in line with that attitude, you end up needing to tweak a lot of little things in order to get the result you want.

We use Jira on daily basis at our work.
All projects are first created on jira and respective team(Developer, tester, lead) is assigned. Estimate of the project is added. During course of project all tasks/issues for this project are raised with this project id and hours worked are logged under it.
On the whole I find Jira very convenient and easy to use.

Avantages

Its very simple and efficient tool to track, manage projects and capture efforts .
It gives very clear idea of status of project (in-progress, ready to test, ready for release etc) , items being worked on in the project and team working on it under one tab.
A tester can raise defects with severity under project tab and assigns to developer which automatically informs developer through email. Developer fixes defects and assigns it back to tester.
It arranges the work assigned to user on the basis of priority shows it on the very first dashboard page after login.
It has capability to log hours along with description of work done. The hours logged can exported to report format and verified for every member working in project.

Inconvénients

Not big cons as such.
The only con I see is it does not support peer programming. Any issue can be assigned only to one person. If multiple people are working on a single issue or multiple leads are reviewing code jira does not really have capability to support this.

I had a good experience, from my beginnings as a product manager to managing developers. I can better organize my work flow, and make our day to day more agile.

Avantages

Inconvénients

Its a great tool, has increased our productivity, development speed, reduced bugs and most importantly, given visibility on our developers time.
The negatives are minor nuisances compared to the benefits it gives.

Avantages

Gives a real granular approach and accountability to your work. It allows for everything you do to be tasked up, with time frames associated. Helps with project planning, and giving time estimates for deadlines. It also allows us to early on see if a project is going to slip, if any early tasks slip.
It has given our company a much better agile approach to development.

Inconvénients

The software isnt intuitive, and relatively feature rich, making it complex to understand how to use it to its full potential.
We have some issues, which seem to create a lot of admin work, such as once a task is done, there is no easy way to put that task into review. The best way, is close the ticket, make a new ticket that is review and assign it to someone, which will need to go into the next week sprint to not affect sprint stats.
Also no ability to assign multiple people to a ticket, such as a review for 3 people to look at. You need either 3 seperate tickets, or 1 master ticket and 3 sub tickets (not ideal if one person doesn't complete it within the sprint, as it pushes everyone into +1 week late).

My Review: Open DevOps

Publié le 27/02/2023

Avantages

The feature of Open DevOps that I enjoyed the most was its versatility. It gave me the freedom to adapt and adjust my infrastructure to meet my needs while enabling me to swiftly design, deploy, and manage cloud-based applications. Because to Open DevOps' open source nature, I had access to and control over the platform's source code, which allowed me to adapt it to my unique requirements. The platform also offers a vast selection of tools and services to facilitate and speed up development and operations. In conclusion, Open DevOps offers a practical and successful method for creating, deploying, and managing cloud-based applications.

Inconvénients

It was a little tough for me to browse and the interface was a little perplexing. The resources and choices I required to handle my projects were hard to come by. I also thought the pricing structure was a little difficult to understand and a bit confusing.

Publié le 08/10/2021

Avantages

Jira makes it easy to collaborate within the team and with the clients. We can monitor and keep a track of our work. Also, its integrations with 3rd party apps are helpful.

Inconvénients

UI is a little difficult to maneuver across.

Excellent tool for Agile Project management

Overall it is beat suited for an Agile development team to track their stories being completed smoothly in a sprint cycle if your team follows Sprint SDLC.

Avantages

It is easy to customize your own team board for managing the user stories/bugs during a Sprint. It helps to keep the development team and Product team on the same page about the progress of the sprint. It is easy for the product team to view the history of a ticket and tag people in their comments if they have any update or questions. The flow of ticket and child-tasks across the board from "To-Do" to "Done" is very easy. You can create your own dashboard and offers built-in bar graphs or pie chart demonstration. The mobile version is smooth to use as well. Defect management is very easy. It's integration with TestRail, Confluence, Octopus and TeamCity works like a charm for the need of my project.

Inconvénients

The UI gets a bit overwhelmed because it tries to display all your columns in a single landscape view. Accessing an old completed story or a closed story can be a pain.

Jira promotes collaboration between disciplines

Jira lets my managers utilize their designers to make changes in user interface and experience and then those changes are sent directly to developer tasks to be completed without any further discussion. It streamlines and simplifies workflow on most multi-step, multi-discipline projects.

Avantages

The product simplifies the ability to attach design comps through the Envision plugin. There's not a lot of software that can do this seamlessly to coordinate between managers and developers.

Inconvénients

Unfortunately this software has a very granular experience. This can be great for developers, but the many steps in the process of collaboration and completion can provide a steep learning curve to new project managers.

I've worked with Jira for two and a half years as a software developer. The engagement with the team and manager is great, it was always very easy to pick up a task and work on its flow through the development process.

Avantages

Jira offers a great task management for the team with a nice and clean visibility. The project flow is very easy to manage and see what is done and what is left to do.

Inconvénients

At the beginning it can be a lot hard to navigate and learn the flows, sometimes there is too much information on screen.
