Impressive cloud based IDE

I got hold of a Chromebook to try out the OS and to see if I could make use of it as a light laptop alternative for studying, refreshing my development skills and blogging. I thought I'd struggle to find an IDE I could use that would be even close to usable and I couldn't have been more wrong!

CodeEnvy is really impressive, it has every project type I think I'll ever need and seems to work without a hitch. I can always go back to where I left it and with Git support I know I have my code and can track changes easily.

Chromebook is a real option for a cheap development environment.. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Avantages

Free option, huge support for development frameworks and languages, simple to set up and use.

Inconvénients

Haven't found any yet.

A Feature Rich Cloud based Development Environment !

Publié le 15/01/2019

Avantages

1. It is cloud based development environment and hence can be accessed anywhere on any device
2. The interface is clean and hence it is easy to learn about the tools and just getting hang of the IDE.
3. It is ideal for a web developer like me who has to work in team since it allows easy code sharing and collaborative features to allow other developers to edit and compile code on their machines.
4. It has support for all the latest technologies such as nodejs , reactjs etc.

Inconvénients

The only downside is that it is simply a cloud based interface to a development environment so it needs internet and can be heavy in data usage depending upon what you are doing.

The closest thing to a real Java IDE in the Cloud, but not ready for production

I've been looking forward to an online Java IDE since the announcement of Eclipse Orion (which support only Javascript for now) and was excited to try Codenvy. It looks promising, but it's clearly not ready for production work. From my shot experience with it, it seems like it has all the basic features for prototyping of a new simple project. But it does require some more polishing before it can be used on a real-size project. I think I'll use it mainly for playing around with Docker.

Avantages

Java support and syntax highlighting
Docker and maven integration!
Familiar IDE layout, similar to Eclipse/IntelliJ
Integration with Git cloud repositories like BitBucket and Github (among others)
Fair choice of Java application servers (Jetty, Tomcat, JBoss, Glassfish) for deployment

Inconvénients

No support for refactoring
No way to search through whole project
Limited keyboard shortcuts
Limited number of maven archetypes available
Cannot run single Junit tests
Buggy code editor

I'm using Codenvy for developing ongoing personal apps, when not in my main development station. While it's really complete and effectively comfortable, it has it's limitations. The first that really struck me, is that you don't have search/replace. Other keyboard shortcuts are either obscure, or inexistent.
For small projects, it's totally recommendable, but it may not be a great option for enterprise-grade projects.

Avantages

Varied language support. Visually awesome IDE. Fast, dynamic and comfortable, even if it's a web app. Runs on Docker, and Docker always improves everything. You can use default Dockerfiles, or just create your own.
Many features and support for CVS and DBs.

Inconvénients

No Scala, no specialized langs like Octave. Cannot customize all colors in the IDE theme (blue over black in Python? No no). It only has templates for web-related files (HTML, CSS, JS, etc).
No search/replace!?

I've only just started using the app so I really can't give a real comprehensive review. At this point I'm very impressed as it seems to have nearly every feature/functionality that a desktop app.

Avantages

Love the built in dependencies (Angular/Gulp/Node, etc.)
UI is laid out very well. Standard spots for usual Web Dev environments/browsers
Amazed that you provide Terminal that seems to have root access.

Inconvénients

I really can't bang on the app. I know this is what you're really looking for - honest, valid insight into your users' thoughts/feelings/wants/needs. Unfortunately I'm a junior developer and this tool is way above my skill level. With that said, I promise to return and provide relevant feedback and thoughts as they come along.

It's the least I could do for company that has developed and provides such a great SAAS.

Best,

I just give a try to create a rails app with this IDE. and it was a great experience, and the IDE itself, feel like I'm working on a native desktop environment application. I'm very happy to work with this system, also it help me to carrying coding workplace and the code wherever I go, because I use PC for my home computer and another PC for the office, so I need to sync up with my workspace, settings ..etc, thanks for the great product.

Avantages

The app feels more native.. and it's more familiar with the desktop IDE programme. easy to use, and great built-in tool for the quick task.

Inconvénients

I think the app need more performance improvements. Especially when loading the project workspace.

Codenvy: A great choice for coding in the Cloud

I am a heavy user of the Cloud 9 IDE and a big fan of the complete cloud based coding environment. So, I was very excited to give Codenvy a whirl. I must say that I was not disappointed. I'm always wary of products that claim to be developer tools that do not do a good job catering to the developer community. Right off the bat, Codenvy does a great job at that. Their free offering is at par with Cloud 9. They do not give clear specifics on upgrading their services, which I find a bit off putting. The starting 512mb of ram that they give is not adequate for much beyond a bit of prototyping. To really work on a full scale app requires allocation of more resources. I'd rather not have to speak to someone in sales just to upgrade my workspace to a high tier. One thing that I am excited about is how they offer a paid version offsite. Cloud 9 is also based on an OpenSource project and so you can easily run the C9 engine on your own servers, but you lose a lot of the features that they have coded into their product offering....the fact that I can run an Open Source version as well as pay to run the full version in my own environment is a nice feature.

Pricing out of the way, lets get down to the fun stuff! The ide is well thought out. i enjoy the Che engine. It certainly has a good feel to it. It's a bit light on features at the moment, but that is not a bad things. It has what it needs and it can obviously grow as needed.

The Docker environment is something that I love! Here, Codenvy shows that it has a good handle on the environment. I was able to run php applications with ease.

Bottom line, I do not feel that this is a mature a platform as C9...but that is a fault that is easily cured with time. But they do have a great product, and certainly with the ability to code and use eclipse plugins, makes this a GREAT choice for an Eclipse shop.

Codenvy Review!

Publié le 10/12/2017

Avantages

I would say it is one of the easiest cloud IDEs to setup. It gives on demand real-time collaborative IDEs and it's quicker than Cloud9 in this department.
A while ago, it was just the code you could access wherever you are. But now with Codenvy, even the environment is not required. You open the browser, you login and bam! You're good to go. It's has really taken programming to a new era.

Inconvénients

The overhead of the page loading is a bit slow. But again, it has all these options to be taken care of. But I would really appreciate it if the loading speed was a bit faster.

brief overview

Hello,

I must admit I haven't been using codenvy for a long time - I'm just a newjoiner so far. However I love the idea of cloud IDE! And I love the design! dark, easy on eyes, contrast is great and all the colors are visible very well eventhough everything is dark. Also I haven't run into a cloud IDE that has a running X server - that's something new (for me at least).

However there still are a few things I'd like to be changed...
First of all - logging in to the system. Username and password are passed via GET [or a very poorly secured POST] and both are visible in addressbar once the LogIn button is clicked. What is that??? Comon guys, it's just not right. What's the point of masking password in TextField if it can be seen in address bar?
Also It's very annoying that virtual machine powers off after several minutes. If I'm writing an application I need to relaunch my code quite often and these poweroffs are really frustrating.

Apart from that the IDE looks really smooth even on my 10'' notebook - there's enough space to see everything. Also I love that it supports multiple languages and even databases. It's really nice to have everything in one place.

Réponse de Codenvy

First of all, thank you for using Codenvy. We are going to be addressing the short timeout for runners in our 3.9 release due in late April. On the password concern could you please email me an example screenshot of this as I am unable to reproduce what you're seeing and we take security very seriously. You can reach me at bmicklea@codenvy.com.

I dont want to talk about ambitions of Codenvy. Their growth rates speak for themselves. The developers have done a very high quality product. It contains a lot of interesting solutions. Such as code refactoring, multi mode and invitations. And if you have an account in Google, the registration may take a few minutes. But if you do not wish to use a Google account, the registration of this does not become complicated, and will remain the same simple. Codenvy supports a large number of languages - Java, Java Script, PHP, Python, Ruby, HTML, and CSS. And their number is constantly increasing. As far as I know, the Codenvy editor was originally made for Java, so it would be desirable for other languages to see the editor of the same excellent functionality. Before deploying the application, users are able to collect and publish the project, run it on a local server Codenvy or run the application in debug mode. And it's all in the cloud! Also Codenvy uses Git as a version control system that will appeal to most developers. Already available the invitation to people your virtual workplace (import Google contacts or address an invitation), as well as an invitation to GitHub collaborators. Now you can use Codenvy absolutely free. I also want to add, it would be nice if there was support for the russian language to the russian-speaking community has been able to use the service without problems.

When my macbook died, i was looking for more cost effective options. As per Moors law, the processing speeds/memory should increase and cost should decrease but i had always ended up paying more. This is when i was introduced to Chromebook and Codenvy. For a freelancer like me codenvy is the best approach to complete my POCs and have them ready for implementation. I am able to validate my architecture and designs quickly with the help of existing templates built into the system. This is an excellent replacement of my desktop environment. GITHHUB and SVN integration are excellent
It provides an excellent opportunity to start work anywhere without being tied to a machine or infra

Now the gripe part, i gave low customer service score because i found it hard to configure a runner. It is a simple activity but the documentation was inadequate. Further i think some standard technology products are missing maybe because there may be some negotiations needed with the product vendors

Impressively smooth transition from desktop to a cloud IDE (java/maven project in git)

I was initially skeptical. How good could it be? So I setup a free account, imported my private git repo from bitbucket, a Java/Maven project and it just built... first time I tried it. Impressive.

I thought my database requirements for testing would surely fail, so i looked into setting it up and I was pleasantly surprised to find that codenvy uses docker, and even has pre-configured scripts for databases including postgresql.

It even had a VIM keyboard setup for the editor.

It's not perfect - I had trouble navigating the GIT menus within the tool. Pulling/pushing were fine, but reverting uncommitted changes isn't intuitive (in fact, i haven't tried the solution suggested in the forums yet).

Pricing for small accounts it's clear. Free gives you limited (but fair) VM resources, while the next step up (premium) apparently provides better resources and access but details are hidden behind the dreaded "contact sales" form.

Overall, it's impressive.
